2011 Summit Review

The North Africa Oil & Gas Summit 2011 was a great success despite challenging times in the region. Industry leaders working in the North Africa market were united in Madrid. Debates regarding the development and status of the industry in 2012 were at top of the agenda in the conference room as well as in the exhibition area.

Geopolitical considerations post-Arab Spring as well as the future of North African gas were themes that ran through the two days of the conference. Topics were tackled from a commercial, strategic and technical perspective, and the discussions were “sometimes provocative, always insightful.”

The gala dinner held in the splendid Casino de Madrid and sponsored by Repsol, saw attendees enjoying fine dining and entertainment from traditional Spanish flamenco dancers. This networking evening allowed delegates to better get to know their colleagues in the industry in a relaxed atmosphere.

Former Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, discussed lessons learnt from Iraq and Afghanistan with regards to creating a viable regulatory environment in a post regime period and explained possible scenarios for Libya post Gadaffi.

Jalel Smaoui, Deputy Manager Exploration & Promotion, ETAP, presented on behalf of ETAP’s CEO, Mohamed Akrout. He revealed their plans on how to improve and develop the hydrocarbon sector in Tunisia through co-operations with key IOC investors.

Renewable energy development was an important focus for this year. Patrice Dreiski, Senior Expert, Energy Charter Secretariat discussed the policies that North African countries are considering to help maximize their renewable energy development.

A whole day was dedicated to the development and production of unconventional resources in North Africa. Baker Hughes held a pre-conference workshop on shale gas development, with discussions centring on how to optimize cost effective recovery of hydrocarbons in the region.
